My Journey From Sweet Lulu’s Bakery to Coral Strands

Karen Moran

If you followed an old recipe, a wedding directory link, or a Charleston lifestyle feature to get here, welcome! As every sweet story evolves, so did mine.

As a lifelong creative and serial entrepreneur, I don't just run brands — I build them from the ground up with meticulous attention to detail. The same dedication to artisan quality that put my bakery on the map is woven into every single silk knot, gemstone, and tote bag at Coral Strands.

For nearly a decade, Sweet Lulu's Bakery was a beloved staple of the Charleston, South Carolina luxury food scene. We built our reputation from the ground up, catering more than 300 high-end Lowcountry weddings and events with meticulous attention to detail.

That foundational drive and dedication to artisan quality didn't disappear — it simply traded sugar and butter for high-end design textiles, structured canvas, silk, gold, and fine gemstones. Today, that exact same ground-up design standard defines Coral Strands.

Honoring Our Charleston Culinary Roots

Sweet Lulu's wasn't just a bakery; it was a fast-paced creative arena that captured national attention from food enthusiasts and major media outlets.

  • National Television Features: Just three months after launching, the Cooking Channel's Unique Sweets found our boutique wedding catering company and featured our signature mason jar desserts twice.
  • The Bourdain Connection: Ironically, the night our national episode premiered in 2015, the late Anthony Bourdain's acclaimed Parts Unknown Charleston episode with chef Sean Brock aired at 8:30 PM, right before our slot. Because of that exact scheduling, I still joke that Anthony Bourdain once opened for me.
  • High-Profile Social Proof: Over a decade in the Lowcountry, Bill Murray fell in love with our Key Lime Pie, we personally curated and delivered a 50th birthday basket to Darius Rucker, and we catered private events for James Beard Award-winning chefs.
  • Reality TV Fame: When Bravo TV's Southern Charm hired Sweet Lulu's to cater an episode, the cameras caught real-world reality TV antics unfolding right in front of me — turning my direct, candid facepalms into viral GIFs used across national television teasers.

From Luxury Desserts to Handcrafted Bags & Jewelry

The transition from designing luxury desserts to engineering structural canvas totes and forging fine jewelry felt entirely natural. Whether you are baking a multi-tiered cake or reinforcing a premium canvas bag, everything relies on structural integrity, meticulous proportions, and an artist's touch.

Today, that exact same dedication to quality shapes our core collections:

  • Our Elevated Canvas Totes: We take raw, classic silhouettes and completely re-engineer them. By bypassing fast-fashion assembly lines, we focus on heavy-duty structure, premium canvas, and include our signature hand-curated styling kits to turn a simple bag into a personalized keepsake.
  • Our Handcrafted Gemstone Jewelry: Each piece is independently handmade, hand-knotted on premium silk, and accented with sterling silver or 14K gold finishes. We transform vibrant, raw gemstones like deep turquoise and tourmaline into wearable art.

A Sweet Thank You to Our Community

To everyone who supported Sweet Lulu's Bakery in Charleston, thank you. That chapter built the foundation for everything that followed.

The next chapter landed in Key West, Florida — specifically inside the historic Ferdinand Hirsch Cigar Factory, where Coral Strands now operates as an independent studio. No retail storefront overhead, no assembly lines. Just premium materials, handcrafted work, and the same obsessive attention to detail that earned Sweet Lulu's its reputation in the Lowcountry.

Same maker. New medium. Same standard.
