1. The Touch Test
Real turquoise is a mineral and conducts heat differently than plastic or resin. Held in
your hand, genuine turquoise typically feels cool to the touch at first and warms slowly. Plastic and resin imitations tend to feel warm almost immediately and have a smoother, more uniform surface texture. This test is a useful first screen but not conclusive on its own, since some resin composites are made to mimic stone texture closely.
2. The Visual/Matrix Test
Examine the stone under magnification. Natural turquoise usually shows irregular matrix veining — the darker web-like pattern from host rock — that varies unpredictably across the stone. Imitations often have matrix patterns that are too uniform, printed, or repeat in a way natural stone never does. Be aware that reconstituted turquoise (crushed genuine turquoise mixed with resin) can also show authentic-looking color but with an artificially uniform matrix.

Turquoise ranks 5–6 on the Mohs hardness scale. A steel pin or knife point will scratch plastic and many howlite imitations relatively easily, while genuine turquoise resists light scratching. 4. The Acetone Test
A cotton swab dipped in acetone (nail polish remover) and lightly rubbed on an inconspicuous area can reveal dye.
